Chuck-will’s-widow is a bird breed that is part of the family of Nighthawks and Nightjars. Its song sounds similar to a Whip-poor-will and sings its name at dusk. After going through a lot of pictures for bird identification, Chuck-will’s-widow looked right for the bird I had captured in the photo. From what I read, it eats insects, and will occasionally eat small birds and bats. The offical bird identification is Caprimulgus carolinensis.
In the sunset, out in the wide-open Kansas countryside, the Chuck-will’s-widow roosted on a metal fence post with its beak tucked in as I snapped photos. The bird was truly unconcerned about what I was doing as long as I didn’t get too close.

So many different hades of brown, and against the blue. Nice photo.
I’ve never heard of this guy.
I really like this picture, its eyecatching, and I love the colours of the bird against the background of a lovely blue sky. Like Bo, i’ve never heard or seen of this type of bird before.
Actually, I hadn’t heard of this type of bird before either. I’m trying to photograph and identify birds I’m not familiar with. Anyway, I thought this little guy was a cutie.
Thank you for your comments and stopping by, Bo and townie.
