Turkey Vulture

This Turkey Vulture sitting on a mailbox post didn’t mind me approaching it. The vulture watched a slow moving turtle cross the road acting as if it were the guardian.

The vulture struck several poses for me. Can you imagine this picture for ‘We Deliver’ by the U.S. Post Office?

It was as if the vulture was saying, “Is this side better?”

Two vultures flew out of the bush past the mailbox vulture. One vulture struggled to land on this slick utility post amid flapping wings and feathers. It slid down the post and then flew away.

I had transported the turtle safely to the other side of the road. The mailbox vulture decided to go join its friends and flew away.

“Mythically, the vulture and condor are links to the ancient griffin. The griffin was often given the features of a variety of animals, but it was always a protector, particularly of Nature and all of her spirits. To encounter a griffin was to meet a guardian of the sky and earth and usually meant that great magic and power would awaken within our own life.” –Ted Andrews, Animal-Wise

We have lots of these guys here in FL. You find them mostly along the roadside (or in the middle of the road) shredding some fresh roadkill. Once I saw them pouncing on a cow in a field.

Vultures are interesting birds, for sure. I’m amazed at how these big birds, along with turkeys, can fly so fast. I love seeing the wing spans on the large birds.

Thanks for your comments and stopping by, Bo and Paul. :)
