Summer is deep in its various hues of green and insects galore. Before I had taken this photo, I had discovered a huge tick on my head. I thought the lump was a piece of dirt or something from wandering around in the thick of trees near a creek. When I yanked it loose and examined what had been stuck on my head, it moved. I realized instantly that it was a tick (with its tiny head intact and not in my scalp), and let out a piercing yell that resounded throughout the fields and hills. Dogs from the nearby farm ran out barking. I don’t like ticks. Ticks give me the creeps. I don’t know what happened to that blood sucking tick that had been on my head because I had wildly flung it off my finger. No telling what that tick thought flying through the air.

Wonderful
I share your distaste for ticks. And I know that feeling of “I want this off now!”. Ticks and chiggers come with the territory, though, for outdoor photographers. I use duct tape to remove’em — actually Gorilla Tape which is over-engineered duct tape. Just cover’em with a piece of tape, remove the tape and (hopefully) the tick, fold tape edges over the tick creating a handy disposal package.
Yeoow… ticks.. are bad. They can make you very very sick.. so I hope it wasn’t on you for very long.
innovatel–Thank you!
Dave–Chiggers! Grrr! Chiggers, the little buggers, get to places unmentionable. I hadn’t thought about duct tape. That might remove some skin too, especially if it is Gorilla Tape. LOL Yeah, ticks, chiggers, spiders, and high whining combat mosquitoes are part of the parcel for outdoor photographers.
Paul–I have had a few tick bites and so far, nothing to ail me. Ticks are yucky and creepy.
I don like’em! But I’m destined for more, and with your love of creeks I suspect there are crawly creatures in your future too. I’m feeling a need to explore more the woods along Kansas creeks, and deep grass is calling to me. I guess it’s better than being eaten by bears and mountain lions, I guess.
I’ve been told that eating bananas repels mosquitoes. Perhaps garlic eaten repels fleas and everyone around you too. LOL And then there is tucking a sheet of Bounce fabric softener on you to repel the biting insects. I haven’t tried this. Perhaps I’ll eat a banana, a clove of garlic, and tuck Bounce on me and see if that works while out in the wild. It’ll do something for sure.
By the way, recently I was out on a shoot when something really big crashed through the bushes. Scared the whatever out of me. I don’t know what it was. After my heart slowed down, I was curious with my camera at the ready. But whatever it was had fled.
