Ghost Mill at Cedar Point, Kansas

Posted by Anna Surface on November 1, 2008

Cedar Point is considered by some standards as a ghost town in Chase County, Kansas. The Cottonwood River has been known to flood, and in which, had been part of the mill. In photo processing, I decided to treat the ghost mill in half color, and half black & white.

Yep, I like the way this works, the half-and-half treatment of this very picturesque old mill.

  2. This mill with steam and waterfall looks as though it could be in England somewhere rather than Kansas. Great shot.

I have to be honest – I don’t like the half-and-half treatment. You are a first class photographer who doesn’t have to rely on gimmicks.

    :( Sorry

  4. Hi Danton and Paul. Thank you for your comments and stopping by. :)

Danton, in a way, I like the half-and-half treatment too. It was an experiment, as I love to play with my photographs. :)

Paul, there are many Kansas scenes that remind me of England. :)

Hey Yesbuts! Well, I have that “yes but” in me as I do like to work with effects and treatments of my photographs. I can’t leave them alone naturally most of the time. This wasn’t a gimmick, just an experiment. I’ve been toying with black & white with color in various ways. I’ll keep toying with this type of process. I’m not much into pure black & white unless a photo just screams black and white…and that may happen during winter and snow scenes. I’m very much into the creative process with photography—photography art. No need to be sorry, though, as I do appreciate your honest comment. It is okay not to like this, as it doesn’t chime your bells. Just know that sometimes I feel like a nut… hee-hee. Thank you for your comment and stopping by. :)

  5. Preston and Anna,
We are planning a mixed use town in Stanley Kansas. Attended High School here in late 60’s and would like to resurect a bit of Kansas history. Our little town was a great place to grow up, I am sure it was larger in memory than it really was. I am trying to paint a vision for the collaborators that are working on this project to incorporate some of the wonderful architecture found all over Kansas. A turn of the page in time, it gives me a great feeling thinking about it. We are fortunate to have a excellent pedestrian friendly location that will support retail, office and residential. I am a small businessman with a vision. Its a pretty lofty goal but the community and the city of Overland Park is supportive. If you are interested, your photos of small town Kansas with the two story buildings, post offices, butcher shops, fire station, bank, town hall, etc… could be the inspiration and replication of the new buildings. Whats in it for you? This town is the first of many mixed use projects to be presented and could be the format for little towns all over our nation, getting lofty again. Seriously, their will be a tremendous amount of media attached to this project, in fact we are going to have a contest to let the community assist us in naming the town. If your in, please send us some photos for our use in our presentations, you of course would be invited to any public forums and would get credit for your photos.
