Rooster Mosaic

This past summer, I started a large and complicated rooster mosaic on top of a wooden kitchen cart. Lots of tiles and cutting and fitting–and I don’t know how many tiles I used–hundreds. The Rooster Mosaic measures 27 inches by 19 inches. Yes, I did cut myself at times. The cart goes into the kitchen for decoration and to be used! I had fun with this and I’m ready to start a new mosaic project. I love how the colored tile goes together with the spaces in between. The grout really sets a mosaic picture off.

The beginning. Drawing and supplies set up.

Getting started. Laying down tile for border and corner ends.

Border completed. Cutting tiles and working on rooster.

Rooster almost completed. Next, filling tile in around rooster.

Mosaic is completed–all tiles and pieces in, grouted, and cleaned.

Crazy Tile Mosaic

I used an irregular board and irregular tiles fitting the tiles however. Mainly it was practice for me. I am working my way to more complicated mosaics using broken glass or china or clipped tiles or combinations. It takes time and patience working with a mosaic… even a Crazy Tile.

Your mosaics are lovely. The button ones are really neat. Also your broken plate ones are really nice.

Thanks for your comments and a big hello! :) The old button mosaic had been a challenge! I love working with tile and whatever else I find in creating mosaics. I also enjoy the grouting at the end of the project. The grout is what sets off the mosaic. I plan to start a new mosaic soon. Hopefully, I will have some mosaics to show for 2008.

Wow, how do you make the time, I particularly like the blue china one, we get a lot of broken china in the garden and even in mole hills in the field! I saw a piece the other day, with two little blue birds on it, I had my hands full at the time, when I went back to retrieve it I couldn’t find it; for years I have been wanting to do a small table, with my finds. I must make it happen.

Anna, Another wonderful talent. I love the rooster and I love the curved pattern too. These are great items.

uphilldowndale, I just do a little at a time when I have time. I like keeping a mosaic in progress as I do enjoy fitting the pieces together of broken china and tiles. I think it is a great idea to collect pieces from the fields to create a mosaic. I’d like to do a small table too. :)

    Barbara, thank you! :)
