Into The Storm

On Sunday the 15th, we had traveled north on Highway 99, a two-lane highway snaking into northeast Kansas. The sunny sky forecasted was building with storm clouds. As we approached Westmoreland, we stopped on a crested hill, the storm was blooming overhead.

The night darkened, the fires increased and brightened under a full rising moon.

Late in the day, the prairie burn commenced at Cowboy Way Ranch And Vacation.

The fires burned hot and swiftly covering a lot of ground in only minutes.

A whirlwind suddenly came up in the middle of the fires.

They rode four-wheelers across the spread to start fires in certain spots and maintained the fires inside the boundaries.

The fire is ignited by pulling flaming grass with a garden rake around the field.

The fires quickly burn the dry grass without harming the large trees.

A little wind kicks up speeding the fire along.
