On Sunday the 15th, we had traveled north on Highway 99, a two-lane highway snaking into northeast Kansas. The sunny sky forecasted was building with storm clouds. As we approached Westmoreland, we stopped on a crested hill, the storm was blooming overhead.

As the sun slid beyond the horizon, the night burn on the prairie began.
The night darkened, the fires increased and brightened under a full rising moon.
In the distance, coyotes could be heard yip-yipping as the ring of fires spread.
Then all was quiet except for the sound of crackling and popping of the fires across the [...]
A night time burn is something to see. Off in the distance, you can see a huge fire on another ranch.
The Cowboy Way Ranch and Vacation crew start a fire right in front of our cameras.
The fire spreads fast.
The fire crackles and pops as the field is consumed.

Late in the day, the prairie burn commenced at Cowboy Way Ranch And Vacation.
The fires burned hot and swiftly covering a lot of ground in only minutes.
A whirlwind suddenly came up in the middle of the fires.
They rode four-wheelers across the spread to start fires in certain spots and maintained the fires inside the boundaries.

The fire is ignited by pulling flaming grass with a garden rake around the field.
The fires quickly burn the dry grass without harming the large trees.
A little wind kicks up speeding the fire along.
Fires hit the fallen cedars causing flames to shoot out high into the sky. Later the branches will be cut off and [...]

This year, 2008, Norm and Trish Brackenbury along with their large family are providing guided adventures for those to experience and feel a working cattle ranch in the prairies and hills of Westmoreland, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, on their nearly 1000 acre spread.
