Kansas in Depth

Just how many miles can one see across the Kansas Prairies? It is so hard to capture depth in a picture, but from this vantage point I suppose one could see 20 to 30 miles into the distance.

Low Creek Bridge

When it floods from heavy rains, the creek flows over the low concrete roadway. Normally, when the creek is low, the water flows under the roadway through several tubes. Last week when it flooded, the raging water broke apart the roadway, dismantling into several pieces. No telling when the Low Creek Bridge will be fixed.

This is the view of the creek to the west.

This is a close-up of the creek flow over the rocks to the east. Another view similar to the Creek Flow photo I had posted earlier.

Double Exposure

From time to time, I like to post my photo ‘mistakes’ whether it was because I had erred in shooting or in post-processing. I find it interesting. This photo of a wildflower was fine until I merged layers in post-processing, and it came out looking like a film double exposure. I remember how I did this, and I might do it again. I haven’t yet tried deliberately blurring a picture while holding the shutter down and moving the camera; yet, it is something I will eventually try.

Respect for the Kansas Weather

The temperature reached 95 degrees today and there was a mild breeze as I took this picture. Seemed not so long ago this very ground was covered in snow and ice as north winds blew unforgivingly. I have learned to respect the Kansas weather. Kansas produces breath taking beauty no matter the time of year.

Chance Encounter

Anna and I are a million miles from civilization when we see this little pickup truck heading our way. We turn into this drive to turn around and wait for the truck to pass only it stops. Fellow wants to turn into the same exact spot. What are the chances of that happening - I mean we are in the middle of no where?

Now to top that, the fellow says, “Hey I know you…” The light bulb flashed as we all remembered each other. After a short conversation we started to leave when it crossed my mind, “Hey, there is a picture here.” I jumped out of our truck and approach him and ask if I could take his picture along with his pal. He said, “Sure.” You got to admit this is a picture. This fellow has lots of character and is highly complimented with what appears to be a very devoted friend by his side.

Windmill of Time

Anna and I acquired most of our pictures within a 15 mile radius from where we live. Never in my life have I seen so much pretty. Then again I’m much older now and I tend to appreciate and see things I never noticed before. I don’t mean things like little green men getting out of circular airborne vehicles. However, if I ever do see these little guys I hope to have my camera nearby.

Creek Flow

I love creeks. I love creek scenes in every kind of weather and season. Creeks draw me and the water soothes me. I Zen out while around creeks. I have creek moments. Well, maybe you get the picture. As a photographer, I am working at becoming better capturing creek moods as I feel them. It will probably be a life long practice with files bulging with creek photographs.

Summer Sunset Farm Scene

Summer is deep in its various hues of green and insects galore. Before I had taken this photo, I had discovered a huge tick on my head. I thought the lump was a piece of dirt or something from wandering around in the thick of trees near a creek. When I yanked it loose and examined what had been stuck on my head, it moved. I realized instantly that it was a tick (with its tiny head intact and not in my scalp), and let out a piercing yell that resounded throughout the fields and hills. Dogs from the nearby farm ran out barking. I don’t like ticks. Ticks give me the creeps. I don’t know what happened to that blood sucking tick that had been on my head because I had wildly flung it off my finger. No telling what that tick thought flying through the air.

The contraption attached to the tractor is a grass cutter, lawnmower thing. I believe they call the contraption a Bushhog.

Why Not Own A Llama?

So here is a Llama. Hmmm… you might wonder why folks might have a Llama. They are good pack animals and will do well if you like to hike and carry stuff, lots of stuff with you. They can be a guard animal, they will spit on the evil predators. Just like sheep, they will provide you with wool so you can knit yourself a Llama sweater for when it gets cool. Llamas are excellent fertilizer producers as well. With all these benifits you are probably wondering why you don’t own a Llama yourself. It is never too late.

While out in the country searching for a creek (that we didn’t find), we came across Llamas grazing in a field. More like ripping the grass from its roots grazing. They were inquisitive animals and fun to watch and photograph.

Ye old prairie church in the Kansas prairie by a lonesome country road surrounded by cattle gates. One time, perhaps, ever so hard working settlers of faith, had raised their voices in song to the heavens.

Flooded Barn and Cadillac

Yesterday, in our Kansas county, we had heavy rains in a short amount of time in which caused flooding. Creeks overran the banks, and certain low-lying places quickly filled with flood waters. This photo above is one place, which has barns, outbuildings, and a stone house, that flooded. The man there has classic cars refurbished. The last time I had taken photos of this barn was in snowy January, and that was the Red Barn and Cadillac.
